PUBLIC REALM PAVES THE WAY FOR INVESTMENT IN SOUTHEND

PUBLIC REALM PAVES THE WAY FOR INVESTMENT IN SOUTHEND

Several major public spaces have been indentified for improvement in Southend, to signify a radical transformation of the town and help attract new private investment.

Regeneration Company, Renaissance Southend, in regeneration partnership with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, has selected a number of key areas across the town centre for improvement and modernisation.

Seeking a combination of public and private funding, it is hoped new investment will enhance the town’s existing public spaces and also create vibrant new civic areas.

As one of the town’s most important public spaces, the Victoria Gateway Project represents an exciting opportunity for investment. Set for a complete overhaul, the junction of London Road, Queensway and Victoria Avenue will be transformed into a soft-pedestrian-friendly environment, connecting the area to the town’s High Street.

Celebrating Southend’s unique position by the sea, another key development area is the seafront. As one of the most visited coastal resorts in the UK, Southend offers huge scope for commercial investment as well as the chance to re-invent the seafront to fit with today’s modern lifestyle and recreational expectations for residents and visitors alike.

Plans to create a cultural quarter in the Clifftown area surrounding Southend Central rail station in the heart of Southend, aims to comprise mixed use developments, including niche retailers and restaurants and is also in need of financial backing.

Councillor John Lamb, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Regeneration, says: “As a council we are investing in our public spaces to create a vibrant town that will thrive for years to come. These forthcoming projects are set to enhance the town as a place to live, work and visit, benefitting residents, visitors and businesses alike.”
