Gateway Digital - August Edition

The summer parliamentary recess usually marks the start of the silly season, and while the papers have perhaps been focusing too much on Lord Mandelson’s blue suede shoes, there have been some significant and encouraging signs of economic recovery over the last month. Mortgage approvals are on the up, house prices have stopped falling and last week the media confidently predicted the recession would be over in 40 days; conjuring images of an economic lent as we face a final period of fiscal fasting ahead of a return to more abundant times. Of course technically the recession ends when the economy stops getting worse, which doesn’t mean that it will become good overnight; but a return in confidence is absolutely vital to progress and delivery in the Thames Gateway. Let’s hope the economic analysts are correct. At the coal face of the Thames Gateway there have been some significant developments too; most notably the short list for HCA’s Kickstart programme includes over twenty major Gateway housing schemes, potentially providing a much needed shot in the arm; so full marks to HCA for passing the tin test on this one. It was also great to see the planning and funding green light on Basildon’s ambitious £38m sporting village, with construction now set to start in October; and Transport to London moving into its new office on Greenwich Peninsula.
