Gateway Digital - June Edition
|
Out with the old in with the new… It’s been a turbulent month for the political leaders in the Thames Gateway, with a completely new ministerial team in place at Communities and Local Government. Thanks to Gordon Brown's 5 June cabinet reshuffle in the wake of the expenses row, former skills secretary John Denham replaces Hazel Blears as communities secretary, assuming overall responsibility for the Thames Gateway. We also say goodbye to Iain Wright, former parliamentary under-secretary of state with responsibility for housing who has moved to the department for Children, Schools and Families. With Blears, Beckett and Wright all delivering keynotes at the 2008 Thames Gateway Forum we were left wondering whether there is some kind of speaker curse. Our suspicions were aroused further at the beginning of last week by the surprise resignation of another 2008 Thames Gateway Forum speaker London deputy mayor Ian Clement who was also embroiled in an expenses scandal. And to top it all Gareth Blacker, director of Olympic Development at the LDA, (you guessed it - a formed Thames Gateway Forum speaker) was suspended on 25 June after an audit by KPMG found a £100m hole in the London 2012 accounts… But it wasn’t all bad for the Gateway. Major developments at Barking Riverside and Thames Barrier East passed key milestones, Crossrail awarded many of the major design contracts, work started on the Royal Opera House Production Park in Thurrock and the north Kent commuter service is up and running, meaning in terms of journey time Ebbsfleet is now as close to Central London as Clapham or Hammersmith.
